Meet Our Clients: New Leash On Life

"God sent me here for a purpose and it's not to spend my life in jail..and if it's to save dogs' lives I would really, really appreciate that." Johnny (in program)

For dogs that do not escape the shelter system quickly, their rescue prospects grow quite small. They become “high risk” meaning that their chances of being euthanized steadily increase. But for six lucky dogs, prison proved to be an escape from this fate. On January 25th, six carefully selected dogs were given the chance of a lifetime. Enter stage left, New Leash on Life (NLOL).

NLOL is an organization dedicated to improving the life of inmates and saving the lives of dogs. Reborn as Marlon Brando, Lauren Bacall, Gretta Garbo, Hattie McDaniel, Humphrey Bogart, and Cary Grant, these six dogs were rescued and paired with inmates to go through NLOL’s program together. With NLOL, both the prisoners and the dogs receive training and help to get their new lives started. At the end of the program, the dogs will be paired with families and the inmates will have new opportunities to find internships and jobs upon their release.

Working with NLOL, we were allowed to visit the prison as the dogs were being introduced to their new partners. Before even entering the prison we were given a list of strict guidelines to follow. Upon arrival we were filled with a mixture of emotions, ranging from excitement to anticipation.

That all faded away when the dogs were taken out of their crates and prepared to enter the prison. They were excited and it was contagious. Straining at the leash, they were overjoyed to meet their partners. The men in the prison proved to be friendly and eager to get to know their puppies. Puppy kisses and treats and cuddling all quickly ensued. Needless to say, it was a sweet experience to watch and be a part of. Overseeing all of this was the program’s training leader, Jessica, who began offering tips on communicating with the dogs and helping them to respond to commands.

While both the men and the dogs have a lot to learn to together, we as a team for Beautiful Social are excited to be a part of it and documenting it along the way. Tomorrow we get to peek in on dog care training. Check back for an update with us soon!

We put together a short film to introduce each of the dogs. Check it out here:
